NSW invests $20m to bring Hollywood, local film productions to state

A new $20 million fund to draw international blockbuster films, such as Star Wars, and Australian-made television and film productions to NSW has been announced by the State Government.

The Made in NSW fund doubles the amount of tax money being allocated to support TV and film in the state.

Actor Bryan Brown said the funding was an "enormous help" to the Australian film industry.

"It certainly will help a huge number of projects get the opportunity to go into production," he said.

When asked whether it was worth pouring millions of taxpayer dollars into the fund, Brown said: "Of course it bloody is."

"What are we supposed to do, turn on the television set and just watch [American crime drama] CSI for the rest of our lives?

"The fact of the matter is, people turn on their television sets to watch Australian stuff now ... the taxpayer gets its money worth.

"I actually think the taxpayer should give us more."

Actor Adrienne Pickering, who plays Missy in ABC drama Rake, said the funding reflected the increase in high quality work being done in the industry.

"There's more great roles for women, you see the Indigenous element coming out more," she said.

Arts Minister Troy Grant said as well as supporting local film and TV, the Government wanted to aggressively pursue international productions.

"Why can't we make the next Star Wars episodes here, why can't we bring Game of Thrones here?" he said.

Mr Grant said if successful, the funding deal would be extended.
