Fears environmental protection order to hamper Linc Energy sale

Troubled oil and gas company Linc Energy is now even less likely to be sold administrators fear, after the Queensland Government issued an environmental protection order (EPO).

Linc Energy was placed into administration last month.

It had run an underground coal gasification (UCG) trial site at Chinchilla on southern Queensland's Western Downs where it was charged with breaching its environmental authority.

An administrator's report to creditors recommended the company be wound up but said there was interest in buying Linc Energy's intellectual property.

Administrator Grant Sparks said a State Government order issued late last week made it a tough sell.

"If someone is interested in taking over that site and the UCG technology, they've got to deal with that consequence," he said.

"Banning UCG makes it very difficult, having an EPO attached to that site adds to that burden."

The State Government said the EPO would ensure the site was maintained safely.

It said the order required the site to be monitored for dangerous emissions.
