Business group revives bid for Palmer refinery community buyback

The group behind a community buyback of Clive Palmer's nickel refinery in Townsville, in north Queensland, says it is working with Katter's Australian Party to try and reopen the facility.

Business group Sister City Partners withdrew its plans for a community buyback of Queensland Nickel earlier this year after the State Government introduced new laws making company directors liable for clean-up costs.

However, director Mark Dunworth said it had revived the bid and was working with federal MP Bob Katter and the Member for Mount Isa, Rob Katter, to either amend the legislation or set up a fund to pay for rehabilitation costs.

"Possibly amendments but the other proposal we're looking at is whether we set up a special fund that over time it would be putting money aside for the environmental issues," he said.

He said he was still in talks with Mr Palmer over the proposal.

"Clive is still happy to deal with me on that front," he said.

Sister City Partners will ask the state and federal governments for more than $85,000 to help fund a business case for the proposal.

It said it hoped to put its latest plans to the State Government within a fortnight.
