Traffic violations caught on car cameras

RESIDENTS have uploaded 70,000 video clips of traffic violations in the past 12 months to the Shanghai traffic police’s web portal and app.
Illegal lane changing was the offense most frequently recorded on in-car video cameras, accounting for 45 percent of clips, police said yesterday. They added that illegal parking was the offense that attracted the most complaints submitted to the police’s mobile app “Shanghai Jiaojing,” accounting for 35 percent.
Other frequently reported offenses were driving in the wrong lane and motor vehicles using bike lanes.
There were about 700 reports of littering from car windows and 500 clips showing illegal use of bus lanes.
The traffic police’s web portal — sh.122.gov.cn — started to accept reports of traffic offenses from the public on May 4 last year. Since then it has received about 58,000 reports, while the app has collected 12,000.
Police said about 40 percent of all reports were suitable as evidence against law-breaking drivers as people were getting better at taking videos. Initially only 4 percent of clips were good enough to be used as evidence.
A 38-year-old man surnamed Ding who lives in Pudong told Shanghai Daily that he had submitted a few hundred clips taken by his in-car video camera to the police, of which about 45 percent were taken as evidence.
Police said clips where car plates were not clearly shown, or where the offenses were not obvious, or places where the offenses occurred were not clear would not be taken as evidence.
