Crackdown to help protect pedestrians

LOCAL political advisers have urged a crackdown on drivers who fail to give way to pedestrians at road crossings, starting with bus companies.
The call came in a proposal submitted to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Shanghai Committee.
In the proposal, they say Shanghai lags behind cities such as Hangzhou and Harbin in enforcing the law. Vehicles are required to give way at pedestrian crossings, but routinely flout the rule.
The advisers called for bus companies to be brought on board and for technology to be deployed to catch and punish law-breaking drivers.
The offense carries penalties of a 100 yuan (US$15) fine and three license demerit points.
Bus company officials told Shanghai Daily they have long warned their drivers and conducted education sessions for them, as well as pressing inspectors to be on the alert.
Yang Yong, a spokesman from the Pudong Yanggao Bus Co, said the company had worked with police last year on a campaign to improve awareness and compliance with the law.
“Our buses had stickers on the outside which said ‘pedestrians have right of way on crossings’ and we hoped the message could be read by all,” he said.
Shanghai traffic police have also said they had recently equipped more crossings with cameras to catch offending drivers and would launch a public education program soon.
