97 held in harmful food racket

NINETY-SEVEN food makers or retailers involved in 43 food safety cases have been detained for producing and selling counterfeit or harmful food since late July, local police said yesterday.
“Shanghai police have a zero-tolerance on food safety issues,” said Bai Shaokang, head of the local public security bureau.
The crackdown was a result of the cooperation between police, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration and the Shanghai Agricultural Commission.
In one case, police in suburban Jinshan District detected an underground workshop that made toxic pork with industrial rosin. The chief culprit Liang Hongyu and his two accomplices were caught at the scene on August 7 with over 120 kilograms of industrial rosin and 1.6 tons of unprocessed pork.
The trio rented the place as a workshop on August 3 and made more than 100,000 yuan (US$16,200) in profit from the toxic pork. The weight of the pork they processed with industrial chemicals exceeded 8 tons.
