Shanghai traffic police clamp down on bike riders and pedestrians

SHANGHAI traffic police announced a new campaign to crack down on traffic offenses committed by bike riders and pedestrians on Friday.

Police remind bike riders not to ride an e-bike without a plate, use a wrong lane, ride through a red light, illegally take a passenger or ride onto bridges or into tunnels where they’re banned.

In the city center including the Bund area, the People’s Square and Lujiazui, many major streets ban bikes including the entire Beijing Road, Nanjing Road W., Fuzhou Road, Xizang Road M., Huaihai Road M. as well as Changshu Road, Baoqing Road and Hengshan Road, police confirmed.

In Lujiazui, bikes are banned within the area of Lujiazui Ring Road and a few streets near the riverfront.

Meanwhile, offenses from package and food deliverymen who illegally park their bikes will be closely followed by the police.

To address the problem of illegal parking of rental bikes, police said they will cooperate with the urban management teams, parking companies and rental bike providers to ensure faster removal of illegally parked bikes.

The first round of crackdown targeting rental bikes will be focused on Huaihai Road from Xizang Road S. to Huashan Road and Nanjing Road from Zhongshan Road (E-1) to Wulumuqi Road, police said.

Police said they will work with the road administration authorities to improve traffic signs on the streets to remind bike riders of bans.

Pedestrians who walk through a red light, climb over fences in the middle of the street and don’t walk on pedestrian lanes or zebra crossings are also warned not to take chances with the police.

Police said they will explore technology to capture pedestrians walking through a red light and work out better traffic light arrangements to increase efficiency at crossroads.
