Megadeth puts on a strong show in front of Shanghai fans

ROCK band Megadeth graced Shanghai Grand Stage on Thursday night as part of their two gigs in China — the band’s first trip here in their 30 years together.

The lights dimmed at 8pm and a video package began. The audience moved closer to the stage in their respective seating sections. The partially filled theater seemed too big for this night, with the balcony left nearly empty. This could have been due to relatively high ticket prices, with the cheapest going for 480 yuan (US$75).

For those in attendance, they were soon greeted by “Hangar 18,” a song nominated for the “Best Metal Performance” at the 1990 Grammy Awards.

With a flurry of double-bass drum thumps and rapid arpeggios from the band’s twin guitars, it matched the band’s typical lyrical themes of political conspiracy and paranoia.

The long hair of the band’s members cascaded downward as each bobbed along with the music, all with big smiles.

The friendly tone was kept through the stage banter with front man Dave Mustaine in high spirits, good-naturedly teasing a chanting crowd that the band couldn’t play “Holy Wars.”

The cheers and banter however came to an abrupt end an hour in, a point when seasoned acts like Megadeth might only be half way into their show.

The band finished with “Peace Sells” and the video screens soon rolled the credits. Much of the audience stayed put, expecting an encore that never came. The lights were soon on, and out streamed the people.

Marked by civility, it was a fun night, despite the end coming too soon.
